Valentine's Weekend

This weekend was great! I finished my first exam block earlier in the week, so I didn't have to think about schoolwork at all = win.

The parentals took the little pumpkin for the weekend and hubby and I were able to spend some much needed quality time. Friday night, I was surprised with dinner reservations at the Eagle's Nest in downtown Indy. It is a revolving restaurant on the 21st floor of the Hyatt, and the floor actually moves! Every hour the restaurant does a complete turn around the city. The food was great (I had crab-crusted Halibut and hubby had Filet Mignon) and the atmosphere was so romantic :-) After dinner, we hooked up with friends for drinks and great conversation.

Saturday was VERY chill...I planned on doing some much needed packing for the move in two weeks. But after I started making my game plan, I decided that A: I didn't feel like it, and B: Outside of random things I am probably going to get rid of anyway, we use most of the things I was going to pack....oh well... Later that night we were planning on going to get sushi downtown, but I fell asleep around 8:30PM for the night so it ended up being a very chill evening as well...LOL

Today, I downloaded a bunch of recipe apps on my phone, and I have a re-ignited desire to try and cook dinner more. Tonight we had slow cooked chicken curry that was a hit with those of us over 2 years old...Tomorrow, I am making baked ziti. Tuesday I am thinking some kind of fish...Will keep you posted on this endeavor - hopefully it last longer than a week!

We have our third musketeer back and this evening has been a great end to the weekend with my guys :-)

Birthday and Snow Day!!!!....Again...And Again!

On the 29th my pumpkin turned two! On Friday, I took an Elmo cake and ice cream up to his school and he was able to celebrate with all his cute friends. Then on Saturday, we had a nice day at home playing and loving on the birthday boy. Lots of family and friends called and video-chatted us to share their love which was awesome! At night, I made a big dinner of honey baked ham, mac and cheese, greens, and yams and the hubby and I toasted to two years as parents. It was a great time and memory :-)

Lately, Nate's vocabulary has grown exponentially! His new phrase is "I wanna [insert food, activity, toy]." Sometimes his words run together, but he is saying everything so clearly! So far the most frequent request have been: pizza, waffles, yogurt, juice (usually after he has been given water), to color, play basketball, and go outside (usually after he has already put his snow boots on, pants optional)...It's so nice that he can use his words and tell us what he wants a lot more now, and boy does he make sure he lets us know exactly what he wants... Also, he is getting great at recognizing animals and their sounds, letters and numbers, and he is making great strides in the potty training department... So proud!

Then to top off a great weekend with the family, this has been the best week ever. On Monday night, Indianapolis (along with many other cities) were hit with what the news is saying "one of the most memorable snow storms in years"...The storm watch was in effect from Monday night until tonight at 7PM (see photo of a piece of ice hubby took off the roof of his car an inch thick). Tuesday, I was pleasantly and thankfully surprised that classes were cancelled. Wednesday, I took as a blessing from God to help me make up for all the academic shamming I've done this semester just in time for my first test on Friday. And we just got the email confirming that yet another day will be cancelled due to icy walkways...can you say mercy and favor? Score. I have spent most of my daytime hours studying histology, but it has been great to just lounge around in our PJs (see below)...

Love and Respect

Lots of snow today...normally I would say that I cannot wait for spring to be here, but I am trying to live in the moment this year and enjoy where I am without trying to rush, so I will just say that a warm climate residency location sounds appealing... ;-)

Nothing too interesting to report today, I am going to start working ahead on school work I guess so that I don't feel too much like a slacker.

Pumpkin is running this place per usual...He is getting kind of bossy though. When he wants you to play with him, he puts the toy in your hand and says "here! here!"....and don't try and put the toy down, not a happy camper....

One topic that really doesn't get discussed on my blog too much is the matrimony part of my life. Part of it is because I'm not one to put all my "business" on the world wide web, so I try to err on the side of caution with very little info as possible - there are two parties involved so I don't want the Hubs to feel his privacy is violated. And also, because I feel like I know a lot more about being a mom than a wife, so I don't have as much "experience" to share regarding that topic...BUT, I will say I do have something to contribute. First of all, that marriage has proven to be harder than both motherhood and medical school combined (Yes, even for me, Superwoman...hehe). I know we all think of marriage as a couple running on the beach into each other's arms and walking into the sunset of love, but that is hardly the case...I think the recent divorce statistics can attest to that, unfortunately.

Imagine oil and water fall in love and trying to mix everything about them together, forever and ever = marriage :-) On the flip side, imagine finding your best friend, biggest supporter, the person you laugh the hardest with, the person whose shoulder you can cry on, tell your deepest secrets to without fear of being judged, build a family with, and the person that thinks you are the most beautiful woman/handsome man in the world all wrapped into one person = marriage. If done right and taken seriously, its like one of the most rewarding life experiences ever. Looking back on the past 8 months, there are quite a few things I have to pass on to those who jump the broom...

1. Let GOD be the head of your marriage. Your marriage should be a ministry to the world about Christ's love for the Church if people look at your marriage and it makes them not want to get married, then you got it all wrong...
2. How you communicate before the wedding will not magically change once you say your vows, so work on it.
3. EVERY couple can benefit from pre-marital counseling.
4. It is an inevitable fact that you and your spouse are a product of both of your parents. That is not necessarily a bad thing, but it does need to be acknowledged.
5. You should strive to make all decisions win-win. And "win-win" does not mean that everyone gets all of their requests, but requests are honored to find a happy median.
6. A little gratitude can go a long way.
7. Make respect a DAILY occurrence, ESPECIALLY when you are angry.
8. "Do not let the sun set on your anger." Ephesians 4:26
9. Don't let other people with bad marriages give you advice...find a marriage mentor and still take all advice as a grain of salt. Do what works for you guys.
10. Don't give up. The best marriages take time and work, but they also take mature people who are willing to acknowledge when they are wrong and do what they need to do to show their spouse that they care about their needs.

During break, I read an awesome book called Love and Respect by Dr. Emerson Eggerichs that I think is a powerful tool if you are brave enough to do it. The whole premise is that women require love and men require respect (men need love too and women need respect too, but both sexes require different primary needs). When a woman feels that she is not loved by her husband, she acts with disrespect towards him. When a man feels that he has been disrespected by his wife, he acts unloving towards her. This goes on and on. This is called the "Crazy Cycle". It discusses how to get out of this cycle into the reward cycle and a marriage that God intends for you to have. Very inspiring book. They also have a great Love and Respect blog...

Back to business...

School started on Monday and so far it has been completely different from the first semester. Although I did have a quiz already, for the most part this is going to be so much better than the fall... I think I am going to start taking Yoga during my extra free time. All the lifting of my 40 pound, almost-two-year-old is taking a toll on my back. I tried a yoga video I picked up at target for the first time and I like it a lot! Afterward I felt so aligned and like I had better posture - which made my back feel much better too. I'm going to sign up for a Saturday class through school, they have a great student discount. Right now my mind is still on vacation and focused on other things, but I decided that on Monday I will start to take things a little more seriously ;-)

On Monday, I finally upgraded my computer game - thanks to student loans of course, but I am now on team MacBook, and so far I love it. I hoping that the ichat and working webcam I have now will help me with my "stay in touch with friends" resolution...

Speaking of resolutions, Pumpkin's New Year's resolutions are:

1. No bas (bottles) - so far he is only taking a couple at night with water only...
2. No more night time feedings (we have cut down on the milk A LOT, now he doesn't fuss as much and his belly is a lot less bloated too..."
3. Sleeping in the big boy bed
4. Potty training - even his teacher thinks that he is ready, time to whip out the pull ups!

Over break we were able to spend a lot of time together. He decided that he would start calling me "mommy" and I love it - even when he follows me around saying it over, and over, and over...Santa was very good to Pumpkin who essentially has three Christmas drop offs in Indianapolis, Long Beach, and Detroit :-) We just knew hokey pokey Elmo would be a hit, but he seems to like the tool sets and doctor gear the most - that's when he isn't reading or giving us his Justin Bieber "Baby Baby Oh!" performance (where he sings that phrase into his mic multiple times LOL)...need to get that on tape next

On the 29th, he turns 2!!!! I cannot believe it. He has made the past two years of my life so meaningful. I am so thankful that God has entrusted me with him. We aren't having a birthday party but I am trying to think of something fun we can do with him. I definitely want to take cake up to his school so we can have pictures with his friends...I need to get his birthday photo shoot taken care of too...I really don't have time for this back pain right now...ugh

Also, I found another awesome website for young moms - a young mommy blog is what inspired me to start my own. Meatball Kisses went public on January 1st and has hit the ground running! Pass the following link on to a young mommy that you think needs some encouragement! It's so exciting to meet/hear about other women following their dreams, DESPITE statistics and public opinion... Meatball Kisses

Be blessed everyone and Happy New Year!
