Two down, Three to Go...

I feel like I haven't blogged in forever. It's been busy to say the least...So after Friday's exam and yesterday's final, I am officially done with histology! :insert happy dance:

Even though I still have three exams to go, I am enjoying this babystep into my pre-M2 summer...

The Nates were out of town this weekend visiting family in Texas, so I was soooo excited to see them when they got home yesterday after my final exam...

I was so bummed, however, when the random chills and headaches I have been experiencing since Saturday culminated into a low grade fever yesterday afternoon. Perfect timing, huh? Well, the show must go on, and after a 3 hour family nap, I kept studying until I passed out last night at 11, only to wake up at 4AM to pop some more aspirin to break the returning fever...I couldn't go back to sleep so I decided to make the most of my "awake-ness" and keep studying the female reproductive organs...

Sidebar: This is what happens when you try and salvage the tabs that your two year old got a hold of and decided to stick all over the house...

I have been waaaaaaay more productive in the past 12 hours (despite feeling like I was hit by a bus), than I have been all weekend...the irony. I think it's because I am afraid that if my symptoms are indeed an impending flu virus, it might affect my scholastic intensity. I guess the Lord works in mysterious ways and knew this was the only way to put a halt on my shamming...LOL And to top it off...I just realized that my physiology exam is not tomorrow, it's THURSDAY!!! Woot! I don't know why I didn't realize this, since it's on my iCal, in my Planner, and on the fridge....

Oh! On a cute note, Pumpkin's school pictures came in last week!

Ah well, back to my notes...

Student as Patient...

Yesterday was supposed to be business as usual, but I woke up feeling horrible - nasal congestion, sore throat, coughing, runny nose, the works...

I had every intention of actually physically going to class, but I ended up dropping off the little one and heading to CVS for cold meds and vitamins. I stayed in bed all day - sleeping while I was waiting for the day's lectures to stream. This is when the nerd in me starts to wonder about what bacterial or viral infection has invaded my body. Our last microbiology exam introduced in GREAT detail the immense number of microorganisms that can induce coughing and yellow-green mucus...Lovely I know :-D (You also realize in medical school that you have a greater tolerance/maturity for talking about the "yuckier" things that the body does...well, most of the time...)

I have heard that medical students, doctors, and anyone else in the healthcare field make the worst patients because they prefer to "wait it out" or self-treat with home remedies opposed to medicine. I'm no different, but when I feel bad enough, I give in. By the end of the day, my dad called in an effective macrolide antibiotic called azithromycin (more microbiology info you probably don't care to read LOL); known to many as the "Z-pack", and today I feel soooo much better. Still congested, but well enough to get out of bed and enjoy the day....and class -_-

Fevers and Influenza...Well, Maybe...

It seems like every time I get to talking to someone about how convenient recorded lectures are for being a student mom and keeping up with my motherly duties, I am soon called upon to utilize the resource to the fullest... Pumpkin's fever came and went all weekend, and came and went, and showed up again this morning. Although I am feeling fine, Hubby's immune system couldn't ward off whatever is in our apartment and his fever hit 102 around 4AM...So both of my men were home today and I tried to nurse them back to health the best I could - mostly with fluids and homemade chicken noodle soup...

It is in times like these when I realize how much I have truly learned just after one semester of medical school, but also how much I have yet to know...For example, I know exactly where to check for enlarged lymph nodes - swollen and tender = infection...I know that a spike in your temperature is your body's line of defense to kill bacteria - because they can't survive when their environment temp exceeds the normal 98.6 degrees...I know that if my Hubby does have the flu, and if that strain of the virus is influenza type A, he could take Amantadine within the first 48hrs of symtoms to block further uncoating of the virus...I know that the "seal-like barking" cough that Pumpkin had this past summer resembled croup and that is a parainfluenza virus...and I could go on...So using my knowledge, how then do I apply it to actually help?

Anyone have any suggestions?......

Go on, I'll wait....

Well by 4PM, my ambitious "don't worry I will still get everything done with Pumpkin at home" self was very discouraged because a certain someone did not take his nap that I was banking on to get caught up on today's lectures. It was like he just didn't want to sleep to spite me. At one point I just put him in bed for "quiet time". Surprisingly, he stayed quiet for a while, but just as my GI lecture really started getting good (sarcasm), I heard a little voice yell "Mommeeee! I want book." So he got a few books and was good. Then, I guess he thought since he had read some it was time to play again...he was quite upset when he got denied, and gave me the following face...

Eventually he did nap, and I did get everything done...sort of...I'm not behind and I am almost ready for Wednesday's quiz so that equals a good day. I even got some packing done in the kitchen - it still hasn't hit me that we are moving Thursday...

Ok, Goodnight!
