Fevers and Influenza...Well, Maybe...

It seems like every time I get to talking to someone about how convenient recorded lectures are for being a student mom and keeping up with my motherly duties, I am soon called upon to utilize the resource to the fullest... Pumpkin's fever came and went all weekend, and came and went, and showed up again this morning. Although I am feeling fine, Hubby's immune system couldn't ward off whatever is in our apartment and his fever hit 102 around 4AM...So both of my men were home today and I tried to nurse them back to health the best I could - mostly with fluids and homemade chicken noodle soup...

It is in times like these when I realize how much I have truly learned just after one semester of medical school, but also how much I have yet to know...For example, I know exactly where to check for enlarged lymph nodes - swollen and tender = infection...I know that a spike in your temperature is your body's line of defense to kill bacteria - because they can't survive when their environment temp exceeds the normal 98.6 degrees...I know that if my Hubby does have the flu, and if that strain of the virus is influenza type A, he could take Amantadine within the first 48hrs of symtoms to block further uncoating of the virus...I know that the "seal-like barking" cough that Pumpkin had this past summer resembled croup and that is a parainfluenza virus...and I could go on...So using my knowledge, how then do I apply it to actually help?

Anyone have any suggestions?......

Go on, I'll wait....

Well by 4PM, my ambitious "don't worry I will still get everything done with Pumpkin at home" self was very discouraged because a certain someone did not take his nap that I was banking on to get caught up on today's lectures. It was like he just didn't want to sleep to spite me. At one point I just put him in bed for "quiet time". Surprisingly, he stayed quiet for a while, but just as my GI lecture really started getting good (sarcasm), I heard a little voice yell "Mommeeee! I want book." So he got a few books and was good. Then, I guess he thought since he had read some it was time to play again...he was quite upset when he got denied, and gave me the following face...

Eventually he did nap, and I did get everything done...sort of...I'm not behind and I am almost ready for Wednesday's quiz so that equals a good day. I even got some packing done in the kitchen - it still hasn't hit me that we are moving Thursday...

Ok, Goodnight!

Friday Oh Friday...

I can't remember the last time I was so excited to see the weekend, but today I was skipping when classes ended and the weather was quite lovely so that added to my joy. Normally I would use Friday to practice my distance learning - lecture by webstream - skills, but today I had my student mentor lunch (a twice a semester lunch meeting in which medical students M1-4, residents, administrators, and MDs come together to share experiences and advice (M1s usually just take it all in). I love mentor/social events so these are right up my alley... Also, I had to come in to get my picture taken for my new "Tour the Life Blog" - see below. It's a blog site put together by the admissions office where they follow medical students in different stages in med school for a semester. They were looking for new bloggers and the only caveat is that we have to blog twice a week. That's not too bad, and since I am already semi-regularly blogging, I figured why not!

Needless to say, there will be a lot more activity on this site since I will most likely cross post what I write for TTL for WL...I am the first student mom to be a blogger for IUSM, so I am very excited to put my not-so-ordinary spin on things :-)

The picture has got me feeling extra official LOL...Here's the URL to my new blog...

In other news... moving day is steadily approaching! We are so so so so so sooooooo excited! I have been busily packing the non-essentials and purging us of the junk - if we haven't used it or thought about it in the past year, then it is time to give it away or throw it away.

In Pumpkin news, his new way to get our attention is not to yell, but instead say "Mommeee, Watch!" Love it :-) Today he came home from school with a fever, but with a little TLC (right now when I see "TLC" I'm thinking "Total Lung Capacity", that's what two respiratory physiology quizzes in one week/day will do to a girl...) the fever broke and he has been sleeping soundly since we put him in bed.

Valentine's Weekend

This weekend was great! I finished my first exam block earlier in the week, so I didn't have to think about schoolwork at all = win.

The parentals took the little pumpkin for the weekend and hubby and I were able to spend some much needed quality time. Friday night, I was surprised with dinner reservations at the Eagle's Nest in downtown Indy. It is a revolving restaurant on the 21st floor of the Hyatt, and the floor actually moves! Every hour the restaurant does a complete turn around the city. The food was great (I had crab-crusted Halibut and hubby had Filet Mignon) and the atmosphere was so romantic :-) After dinner, we hooked up with friends for drinks and great conversation.

Saturday was VERY chill...I planned on doing some much needed packing for the move in two weeks. But after I started making my game plan, I decided that A: I didn't feel like it, and B: Outside of random things I am probably going to get rid of anyway, we use most of the things I was going to pack....oh well... Later that night we were planning on going to get sushi downtown, but I fell asleep around 8:30PM for the night so it ended up being a very chill evening as well...LOL

Today, I downloaded a bunch of recipe apps on my phone, and I have a re-ignited desire to try and cook dinner more. Tonight we had slow cooked chicken curry that was a hit with those of us over 2 years old...Tomorrow, I am making baked ziti. Tuesday I am thinking some kind of fish...Will keep you posted on this endeavor - hopefully it last longer than a week!

We have our third musketeer back and this evening has been a great end to the weekend with my guys :-)

Birthday and Snow Day!!!!....Again...And Again!

On the 29th my pumpkin turned two! On Friday, I took an Elmo cake and ice cream up to his school and he was able to celebrate with all his cute friends. Then on Saturday, we had a nice day at home playing and loving on the birthday boy. Lots of family and friends called and video-chatted us to share their love which was awesome! At night, I made a big dinner of honey baked ham, mac and cheese, greens, and yams and the hubby and I toasted to two years as parents. It was a great time and memory :-)

Lately, Nate's vocabulary has grown exponentially! His new phrase is "I wanna [insert food, activity, toy]." Sometimes his words run together, but he is saying everything so clearly! So far the most frequent request have been: pizza, waffles, yogurt, juice (usually after he has been given water), to color, play basketball, and go outside (usually after he has already put his snow boots on, pants optional)...It's so nice that he can use his words and tell us what he wants a lot more now, and boy does he make sure he lets us know exactly what he wants... Also, he is getting great at recognizing animals and their sounds, letters and numbers, and he is making great strides in the potty training department... So proud!

Then to top off a great weekend with the family, this has been the best week ever. On Monday night, Indianapolis (along with many other cities) were hit with what the news is saying "one of the most memorable snow storms in years"...The storm watch was in effect from Monday night until tonight at 7PM (see photo of a piece of ice hubby took off the roof of his car an inch thick). Tuesday, I was pleasantly and thankfully surprised that classes were cancelled. Wednesday, I took as a blessing from God to help me make up for all the academic shamming I've done this semester just in time for my first test on Friday. And we just got the email confirming that yet another day will be cancelled due to icy walkways...can you say mercy and favor? Score. I have spent most of my daytime hours studying histology, but it has been great to just lounge around in our PJs (see below)...
